(BINGHAMTON, NY) –The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Heat Advisory from noon Saturday, June 30 until Monday, July 2 at 10 p.m. Hot and humid conditions are expected with heat indices greater than 105. The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature.

The Broome County Health Department is coordinating with the Office of Emergency Services, the American Red Cross, and other partner agencies and the county is prepared to respond with additional resources, if needed. Health department officials will continue to monitor the situation throughout the weekend. For information regarding human services call 211 First Call for Help. For a life and death emergency call 911.

Here are some additional tips to help you manage the heat:  A best practice is to spend some time each day in an air conditioned space: your residence, a neighbor’s, or a public or retail building or go to: https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/weather/cooling/countycenters.htm (Many locations may have limited or no hours on Sunday. Check to ensure the location is open before visiting).

 Unless your doctor has specifically told you not to, drink lots of water.

 Perform heavy outdoor labor during the early morning or evening.

 If you know older people who live alone, check in with them in person or by phone.

 Don’t leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Vehicles interior temperatures can place children and pets in danger.

 Try to stay in the shade when outdoors

If you must be out in the heat:

 Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a ventilated hat (such as straw or mesh) and sunglasses, and put on sunscreen

 Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
